Myopia, or Nearsightedness, is when the patient can only see things that are close to them. This is because the images are focusing in FRONT of the retina.
Hyperopia is also known as Far Sightedness. These people can see things that are very far, but have trouble with near objects or reading. For them, objects are actually focused BEHIND the retina.
Astigmatism is one of the most common vision conditions; most people have some form of astigmatism. Astigmatism can be caused by an irregular shaped cornea or curvature of the lens, and can lead to blurred vision.
Minor astigmatism may not affect your vision or require treatment. However, many cases lead to blurred or distorted vision, which can result in pain and headaches. Typically, astigmatism is present with nearsightedness and farsightedness. These conditions are described as refractive errors.
At Millennium Ophthalmology, our examinations test for astigmatism using a phoropter and retinoscope, which measure refraction. Depending on the amount of astigmatism, we can provide eyeglasses or contact lenses to help correct your condition. A wide range of other solutions may be available and our ophthalmologist will discuss your options during your consultation.
If you are experiencing vision problems, contact us at (516) 371-1550 today to schedule an exam and consultation so we can determine if you have astigmatism.
